History and Evolution of Gucci

Foundation and Roots

Gucci was founded in 1921 in Florence, Italy, by Guccio Gucci.
Before that, Guccio worked at a hotel in London, where observing the luxurious lifestyle of wealthy guests and their leather luggage inspired him.
Upon returning to Italy, he dedicated himself to learning the craft of leather-making and collaborated with local artisans to open a small shop specializing in leather goods.

Growth, Challenges, and New Ownership

  • After Guccio’s death in 1953, his sons — Aldo, Rodolfo, and Vasco — took over the brand’s management.

  • In the following decades, Gucci expanded beyond leather goods into apparel, footwear, accessories, and even furniture and home décor.

  • In the 1980s, internal family disputes put the company under pressure.

  • In 1993, Gucci was fully sold out of family ownership, and in 1999 it joined the PPR group (later renamed Kering).

  • Today, Gucci remains one of the flagship luxury houses within the Kering group.

  • One of its long-term commitments is the sustainability program Gucci Equilibrium, designed to minimize environmental and social impacts.

  • The iconic double G logo (GG), created in honor of Guccio’s initials, has become one of the most recognizable symbols in the fashion world.

  • Signature codes: the GG logo, floral prints, equestrian motifs (horsebit), and the green-red-green stripe are all brand hallmarks.

  • Creative boldness: Gucci has embraced diverse creative directors over the years, each redefining the house’s identity.

  • Merging pop culture with luxury: collaborations with artists, urban influences, and streetwear elements alongside timeless luxury.

  • Constant dynamism: Gucci dares to take risks, moving beyond traditional boundaries and engaging with the forefront of modern fashion.
